BELLEVILLE — Metro East Gastroenterology is accused of negligence after a patient died following a colonoscopy.

Trevett Goodwin, administrator of the estate of Jacqueline Williams, deceased, filed a complaint on Jan. 29 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Metro East Gastroenterology, et al., alleging they failed to apply the knowledge, skill and care ordinarily used by well-qualified health care providers.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Sept. 18, 2017, Williams was under the care of the defendants for the purpose of a routine colonoscopy. Goodwin alleges the defendants failed to obtain appropriate preoperative clearance, failed to check the decedent's serum potassium level preoperatively and failed to properly perform the colonoscopy.

As a result, the decedent allegedly suffered lack of oxygen to her brain for a long period of time, causing her death on Oct. 14, 2017.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks damages of not less than $50,000, plus costs of this action. He is represented by Grey Chatman Jr. of Chatham & Baricevic in Belleville.
