EDWARDSVILLE — A Florida couple is suing dozens of users of asbestos products, alleging negligence led to the husband's illness.
John C. Wood Jr. and Shirley Wood of Jacksonville, Florida, filed a complaint Feb. 4 in Madison County Circuit Court against more than 70 defendants, alleging failure to exercise due care and caution for the safety of others.
According to the complaint, during the course and scope of John Wood's employment between 1958 and 2004, he was exposed to asbestos, coal dust and other toxic substances emanating from certain products that were manufactured, sold, distributed and/or installed by defendants. On or about Jan, 4, 2019, the suit says, he first became aware that he had developed mesothelioma, an asbestos-induced disease.
Wood says he has suffered great pain, disability, mental anguish and loss of a normal life. Shirley Wood alleges she has been deprived of the companionship, society and service of her spouse. The plaintiffs allege the defendants negligently included asbestos in their products when they knew that the asbestos would have toxic, poisonous and highly deleterious effect to a person's health.
The Woods seek trial by jury, judgment exceeding $50,000. plus court costs and all other just and equitable relief. They are represented by attorney Randy L. Gori of Gori, Julian & Associates PC in Edwardsville.
