EDWARDSVILLE — A Godfrey woman is suing Granite City health care providers, alleging she suffered injuries to her common bile duct following surgery.

Laurie Schmidt and Donald Schmidt filed a complaint Jan. 4 in Madison County Circuit Court against Dr. James A. Kliefoth and Gateway Regional Medical Center, alleging failure to properly perform a surgical procedure.

According to the complaint, Laurie Schmidt underwent surgery at Gateway Regional Medical Center on July 28, 2017, to remove her right inguinal node. The plaintiffs allege Kliefoth failed to protect the common bile duct, failed to properly plan for robotic-assisted laparoscopic cholecystectomy and negligently cut or lacerated the common bile duct.

As a result, Laurie Schmidt claims she suffered bile duct and vascular injury as well as other related injuries. Donald Schmidt claims he has become indebted for the costs of medical expenses and has been deprived of the care, comfort and services of his wife.

The Schmidts seek trial by jury, damages of more than $50,000, plus court costs and all other just relief. They are represented by attorney Zachary R. Pancoast of Rossiter & Boock LLC in St. Louis.
