EDWARDSVILLE — A patient is suing two medical device manufacturers, alleging his pacemaker was defective.

Scott D. Tolie filed a complaint on Sept. 12 in Madison County Circuit Court against St. Jude Medical Inc. and St. Jude Medical LLC, alleging they failed to comply with the standards of care for the manufacturing of a pacemaker device.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff was implanted with a cardioverter defibrillator at Anderson Hospital in Maryville. Afterward, he developed an infection and the pacemaker had to be removed. The plaintiff alleges the device was defective and should have lasted at least seven years.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment against defendants in an amount in excess of $50,000, plus costs. He is represented by Eric J. Carlson of Byron Carlson Petri & Kalb LLC in Edwardsville.
