Memorial Medical Center faces wrongful death lawsuit after suicide

BELLEVILLE — The family of a man who committed suicide after discharge blames a St. Clair County rehab facility.

Matthew R. Medder, executor of the estate of Richard H. L. Medder filed a complaint on July 30 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Protestant Memorial Medical Center and a nurse, Stacey A. Miller, alleging violations of the Nursing Home Care Act and wrongful death.

According to the complaint, Richard Medder a fall at the facility, because nurses failed to respond to his call light. During his stay, Medder complained of nurses not responding to his call light and wanted to go home, the complaint states. Medder was allegedly never counseled for depression before he was discharged. After coming home, Medder shot himself. 

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks damages of more than $50,000. He is represented by Eva E. Golabek of Kralovec, Jambois & Schwartz in Chicago.
