Suit alleges driver caused crash when reaching for phone

BELLEVILLE – An employee of a St. Clair County business allegedly caused a multi-vehicle collision when he reached to pick up his dropped cellphone.

Alexis Richard filed a complaint on June 22 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Michael J. Rayner Sr. and Glass and More Inc. alleging damages.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on July 7, 2016, Rayner was driving a vehicle owned by Glass and More. He was traveling on South Illinois Street when he allegedly caused a multi-vehicle collision after reaching to pick up a dropped cellphone. 

The plaintiff alleges she was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved in the collision and sustained damages of more than $50,000. 

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks damages in an amount greater than $50,000, plus costs of this action.
