BELLEVILLE — A tenant is suing a rental property owner for negligence after she allegedly fell down a flight of stairs.

Naomi Romero filed a complaint on May 23 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Gigi Slothouse, alleging she failed to provide a safe place to live.

According to the complaint, Romero fell down a flight of stairs at the property on Oct. 16, 2017, because of a defective carpet.

The plaintiff alleges that she was injured in the fall and incurred damages and medical expenses in excess of $50,000.

Romero alleges Slothouse failed to exercise reasonable care in installing the carpets and failed to warn tenants of the danger posed by the improperly installed carpet.

The plaintiff is seeking a jury trial and damages in excess of $50,000, plus costs of this action.

She is represented by Jason R. Caraway of Caraway, Fisher & Broombaugh PC in Belleville.
