EDWARDSVILLE — A woman is suing the Village of Bethalto after she allegedly tripped and fell on a steel rebar while walking on the sidewalk.

Bonnie Coleman and Andrew Coleman filed a complaint on April 19, in the Madison County Circuit Court against Village of Bethalto alleging that the political subdivision breached its duty to maintain the sidewalk in a reasonable safe condition.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that on May 12, 2017, Bonnie Coleman was using the public sidewalk located on Woodcrest Drive when she tripped and fell over reinforcement steel used in a concrete manhole.

Coleman claims she sustained severe and permanent injuries that prevented her from attending to her usual duties and affairs. She also claims she has suffered great pain, mental anguish and incurred medical expenses.

The plaintiffs alleges the Village of Bethalto negligently allowed the rebar to remain elevated on the manhole cover, failed to make the dangerous condition safe and failed to warn the general public that such danger existed.

The plaintiffs request a trial by jury and seek damages of not less than $50,000, plus costs of this action.

They are represented by Erin M. Phillips of Unsell, Schattnik & Phillips PC in Wood River.
