EDWARDSVILLE — A woman is suing a property owner after she allegedly fell while walking down steps.

April Cathers filed a complaint on April 3 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Stephanie Tankersley, alleging she failed to maintain the premises in a reasonably safe condition.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Aug. 18, 2017, she was a lawful resident at Tankersley's property when she fell while walking down the steps.

Cathers claims she sustained injuries to her right ankle, resulting in medical expenses, lost wages, pain, disability and impairment in earning capacity.

The plaintiff alleges Tankersley negligently permitted a latent defect to exist in the premises and failed to warn residents of the existing defect.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks damages of not less than $50,000, plus court costs.

She is represented by Laura E. Cole of Smith, Mendenhall, Selby & Cole in Alton.
