BELLEVILLE — A daughter has filed a lawsuit alleging her father's cancer death was caused by asbestos exposure.

Sarah Pinkall, individually and as special administrator of the estate of Thomas Maas, deceased, filed a complaint March 28 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Buffalo Air Handing Inc., Cooper Industries LLC, URS Corp. and others alleging they failed to exercise due care and caution for the safety of others.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that during Maas' career, he was exposed to asbestos fibers emanating from certain products manufactured, sold, distributed or installed by the defendants. On Dec. 6, 2017, Maas learned he developed lung cancer, which the suit claims is an asbestos-induced disease and was wrongfully caused. He died Feb. 10. The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible because they allegedly negligently included asbestos fibers in their products when substitutes were available and failed to provide adequate warnings and instructions concerning the dangers of working with or around products containing asbestos fibers.

The plaintiff seeks compensatory and punitive damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by Randy L. Gori of Gori, Julian & Associates PC in Edwardsville.
