Daughter sues American Honda Motor, Boeing, others after mother's cancer death

Asbestos 03

BELLEVILLE — A daughter is suing a number of companies claiming they failed to warn her mother about the risks of asbestos exposure.

Stephanie Lariviere, individually and as special representative of the estate of Joan A. Shields, deceased, filed a complaint March 7 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against American Honda Motor Co. Inc., The Boeing Co., York International Corp. and others alleging they breached their duties to exercise due care and caution for the safety of others.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that at various times during Joan Shields' life, she was exposed to and inhaled or ingested asbestos fibers emanating from certain products manufactured, sold, distributed or installed by defendants. On Feb. 27, 2017, Shields became aware that she developed lung cancer, according to the complaint, and she died March 7, 2017. The plaintiff holds American Honda Motor Co., The Boeing Co., York International and others responsible because the defendants allegedly intentionally included asbestos fibers in their products when they knew that it had toxic, poisonous and highly deleterious effect to humans health and failed to provide adequate warnings and instructions concerning the dangers of working with or around products containing asbestos fibers.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks compensatory and punitive damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by Randy L. Gori of Gori, Julian & Associates PC in Edwardsville.
