BELLEVILLE – A woman alleges she fell into a manhole while walking at Carlyle Plaza in Belleville.

Tamara Lewis filed a complaint on Feb. 14 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Carlyle Plaza LLC, St. Clair Township and the city of Belleville, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on March 1, 2017, she was walking across the rear of Carlyle Plaza's commercial property when she stepped on a plywood covering that broke, causing her to fall into a manhole.

As a result, Lewis claims she sustained severe, extensive and permanent injuries both internally and externally and was caused to suffer great pain, mental anguish and medical expenses.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to properly maintain, inspect and repair the sanitary manhole and failed to warn the public of the existence of a dangerous condition.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendants in an amount greater than $50,000, plus costs of this action.

She is represented by David H. Bone of David H. Bone LLC in Belleville.
