EDWARDSVILLE — A woman is suing a landlord for allegedly failing to maintain steps leading to the basement.

Christina Whitford filed a complaint on Jan. 17 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Sandra L. Harper, alleging she failed to properly maintain steps in accordance with the applicable building regulations.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Sept. 9, 2016, she suffered a fall on the steps leading to the basement at the defendant's premises.

As a result, Whitford alleges she sustained severe, permanent and progressive injury to her right shoulder that required surgical repair.

The plaintiff alleges Harper negligently allowed the steps to remain in a dangerous condition. She also claims the steps were too steep and narrow to navigate safely.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks damages of more than $50,000, plus costs of this action.

She is represented by Thomas G. Kemper of Butler & Kemper in Granite City.
