EDWARDSVILLE — A deputy sheriff claims he was terminated in retaliation for not supporting the Macoupin County sheriff during election.

Robert Klaus filed a complaint on Oct. 24 in the Madison County Circuit Court against Sheriff Shawn Kahl and Macoupin County, alleging a hostile work environment, retaliation and wrongful termination.

According to the complaint, Klaus alleges he was subjected to a hostile work environment and additional work duties in retaliation for lack of support in the sheriff's election.

As a result, the plaintiff claims he has suffered emotional distress and loss of wages, employment and retirement benefits.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks judgment of more than $50,000.

He is represented by Greg Roosevelt of Roosevelt Law Office in Edwardsville.
