BELLEVILLE – A couple is seeking damages from several corporations after the husband was diagnosed with lung cancer.

Dorian Whitfield and Debra Whitfield filed a complaint on Sept. 13 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Buffalo Air Handling, CBS Corp., Certain-Teed Corp., et al. alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that at various times during plaintiff Dorian Whitfield's employment as a laborer and painter from 1960 to 2005, he was exposed to and inhaled or ingested asbestos fibers from certain products manufactured, sold, distributed or installed by defendants. They allege that on May 12, Dorian Whitfield first became aware that he developed lung cancer, an asbestos-induced disease, and that the disease was wrongfully caused.

The plaintiffs hold Buffalo Air Handling, CBS Corp., Certain-Teed Corp., et al. responsible because the defendants allegedly included asbestos fibers in their products when adequate substitutes were available and failed to provide adequate warnings and instructions concerning the dangers of working with or around products containing asbestos fibers.

The plaintiffs seek damages of more than $50,000. They are represented by Randy L. Gori of Gori, Julian & Associates PC in Edwardsville.
