Couple names Baker Hughes Oilfield Operations, others in asbestos suit

Asbestos 11

BELLEVILLE – A couple has filed suit over allegations that the husband's lung cancer was wrongfully caused by exposure to asbestos.

Leland Clem and Miranda Clem filed a complaint on Sept. 7 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Baker Hughes Oilfield Operations, Barry-Wehmiller Co. Inc., Beazer East Inc., et al. alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, the plaintiffs allege that at various times during plaintiff Leland Clem's career and military service from 1973 to 1988, he was exposed to and inhaled or ingested asbestos fibers from certain products manufactured, sold, distributed or installed by defendants. They allege that on July 12, he first became aware that he developed lung cancer, an asbestos-induced disease, and that the disease was wrongfully caused.

The plaintiffs holds Baker Hughes Oilfield Operations, Barry-Wehmiller Co. Inc., Beazer East Inc., et al. responsible because the defendants allegedly negligently included asbestos fibers in their products when adequate substitutes were available and failed to provide adequate warnings and instructions concerning the dangers of working with or around products containing asbestos fibers.

The plaintiffs seek damages of more than $50,000. They are represented by Randy L. Gori of Gori, Julian & Associates PC in Edwardsville.
