Ironworker alleges broken rib, vertebrae after column fell on him

BELLEVILLE — An ironworker is suing general contractors after he allegedly suffered a broken rib and vertebrae when a column fell on him.

Nathan Owen filed a complaint on Aug. 29 in the St. Clair County Circuit Court against Keeley & Sons and The Kilian Corporation, alleging they failed to provide a safe place to work.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on Aug. 8, 2016, he fell to the ground and an iron column fell on his chest while he was working for the defendants' subcontractor.

As a result, he claims he suffered severe injuries, including four broken vertebrae and a broken rib. He also claims he suffered great pain, disability, medical expenses and lost wages.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants failed to use wooden support beams with appropriate size and weight and failed to provide warning that the wooden support beams were inadequate.

The plaintiff requests a trial by jury and seeks damages of more than $50,000, costs of this suit and any further relief that the court may deem just and equitable.

He is represented by James P. Lemonds and Steven W. Duke of Brown & Crouppen PC in St. Louis.
