Patient alleges medication led to heart attack

An Illinois man is suing Walgreens and a doctor, alleging they didn't warn him of the dangerous nature of the medication he was prescribed.

Robert Hamor Jr. filed the suit Oct. 1 in Madison County Circuit Court against Walgreens Pharmacy Strategies LLC and Dr. Rich Hummel, alleging negligence and carelessness.

According to the complaint, at various times between January 2010 and Oct. 3, 2013, Hummel prescribed controlled substances to Hamor at levels that were more than the regulated limits and potentially fatal, and a Walgreens in Wood River filled those prescriptions. At no time, however, did the defendants inform the plaintiff of the dangers of those drugs, the suit says.

The lawsuit states as a direct result of the negligence and carelessness on the part of the defendants, Hamor suffered a non-fatal heart attack Oct. 3, 2013.

The plaintiff alleges he has endured great pain and anguish, incurred disability and cannot perform his normal and regular aspects of life, and he has become liable for large sums of medical expenses.

Hamor seeks damages of at least $50,000, court costs and attorney fees. He is represented by attorney John J. Hopkins of John J. Hopkins & Associates PC in Alton.
