Long time proprietor of Fast Eddie's dead of self-inflicted gunshot wound

Long time proprietor of the popular Alton restaurant and bar Fast Eddies Bon-Air has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to the Madison County coroner's office.

Edward R. Sholar, Sr., 61, was pronounced dead by coroner's investigator Diondra Horner at 11:48 a.m. today.

A press release issued by Coroner Stephen Nonn indicated that Sholar's son, Edward Jr. went to his father's residence in the morning and "upon entering found the decedent in bed without signs of life."

The release states that a weapon was discovered in Sholar's hand.

"There were no other indications of violence to the body or signs of a struggle in the residence," the release states. "Additionally, a writing with funeral instructions was recovered at the home.

"Family members reported that the decedent had no history of suicidal behavior or attempts, but that he was sometimes dispirited by his declining health and loss of quality of life from chronic medical issues."

According to the release, Edward Sholar Sr. had turned the Fast Eddie's business over to Edward Sholar, Jr.

"The family of Mr. Scholar is noting that they intend to continue to operate his businesses as part of his legacy but they also request that their privacy be respected at their time of loss and grief," the release states.

Nonn further stated that routine toxicological studies would be performed to test for the presence of alcohol or drugs.

Funeral arrangements remain pending at this time, but are under the direction of Gent Funeral Home of Alton.
