Man sues after tripping on a cable

A St. Clair County man is suing two communications companies, claiming he sustained injuries when he tripped over a television cable that was laid across his property.

Sean Miller of Belleville filed a lawsuit on July 1 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Aero Communications of Illinois Inc. and Charter Communications Inc., alleging negligence in a 2014 safety infraction that he says compromised his health.

According to the filing, in March 2014 the Aero laid a cable across the plaintiff’s property in order to access cable television through Charter Communications. The suit says as a direct and proximate result of the defendant’s wrongful acts or omissions, Miller was injured when he tripped over the cable, sustaining a knee injury, medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering and loss of a normal life.

The lawsuit states that the defendants allowed the cable to remain on the property without burying it within a reasonable amount of time, knowing it would create a trip hazard, and failing to warn the plaintiff of its existence on the ground.

Miller seeks judgment in his favor for more than $50,000, plus attorney fees and costs. He is represented by attorney Gary Bement of Belleville.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number 15-L-385.
