Driver accused of running red light on North Illinois

A man has filed suit against the driver who he claims ran a red light and struck him.

Johnie L. Eiland Jr. claims he was at the southbound stoplight at the intersection of North Illinois Street and F. Street in St. Clair County on Oct. 18, 2012, at about 2 p.m. when defendant Mary L. McHugh, who was driving north on the same street, disregarded a red light. McHugh then proceeded to strike a car that had a green light and to hit Eiland, according to the complaint filed June 20 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Because of the collision, Eiland sustained serious and permanent injuries, including a concussion, closed head injuries, headaches and sprains and strains to the head, neck and back, the suit states. He also suffered from a diminished ability to enjoy life and incurred medical costs, the complaint says.

Eiland blames McHugh for causing the collision, saying he negligently failed to obey a red electric signal, failed to keep a careful lookout and failed to keep her vehicle under proper control.

Eiland is seeking a judgment of more than $50,000, plus interest, costs and other relief the court deems just.

Brian Stokes of The Stokes Law Office in St. Louis will be representing him.
