Lopinot assigned to judge case against YMCA

St. Clair County Chief Judge John Baricevic assigned a disabled person’s lawsuit against the YMCA to St. Clair County Circuit Judge Vincent Lopinot on March 28.

Kelly M. White filed suit Feb. 27 on behalf of Jacquelyn R. Meek against the National Council of Young Men’s Christian Associations of the United States of America and Daniel J. Robinson.

The YMCA received the summons March 19 to respond to the lawsuit within 30 days.

In her complaint, White alleges that Robinson was assigned to work on exercises with Meek. Knowing of Meek’s mental and physical disabilities, Robinson allegedly began to steal her personal property while working with her, according to the complaint.

The suit says the YMCA should never have hired Robinson because he had a history of theft-related crimes.

In her complaint, White seeks a judgment of more than $200,000 and punitive damages of more than $50,000, plus pre- and post-judgment interest and other relief the court deems just.

Stephen R. Clark of Courtney, Clark and Mejias in Belleville represents her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 13-L-111.
