Belleville doctor accused of causing stroke in patient

A Belleville doctor is accused of causing one of his patients to have a stroke during a routine exploratory procedure.

Houston Alexander Jr. filed a lawsuit March 8 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Dr. Aaron Greenspan and Protestant Memorial Medical Center Inc., doing business as Memorial Hospital.

According to the complaint, Alexander was a patient of Dr. Greenspan in March 2011 and received an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at Memorial Hospital.

During the procedure Dr. Greenspan and the hospital staff allegedly gave Alexander an excessive amount of medication which caused his heart to slow to a dangerously slow rate. Alexander says the effects of the medication caused him to suffer a stroke.

Alexander accuses Dr. Greenspan and the hospital of negligence.

He asks for more than $100,000 in damages for medical expenses, lost wages and court fees.

Attorney Terry N. Brown of Belleville represents Alexander.
