Eden Village in Glen Carbon sued over resident's care

A Glen Carbon retirement home is accused of negligence in the death of one of its residents.

William D. Paterson, executor of the estate of James D. Paterson, deceased, filed a lawsuit against Eden Retirement Center Inc., doing business as Eden Village on March 20 in Madison County Circuit Court.

James Paterson was a resident of Eden Village on South Station Road in Glen Carbon from July 2012 to September 2012, according to the petition. William Paterson contends James Paterson fell in the facility multiple times prior to his death on Sept. 5. The cause of the resident's death was listed as subdural hematoma which William Paterson alleges was a direct result of the falls.

William Paterson accuses Eden Retirement Center of negligence for allegedly failing to care for James, failing to employ sufficient staff or provide adequate services. He says the long-term nursing and rehabilitation facility failed to help James avoid falls and failed to ensure he was properly treated after injuries.

William Paterson contends Eden Retirement Center, as a direct result of its actions, caused James Paterson to suffer "a marked deterioration of his prior physical and mental conditions." He says the lack of care prevented James from attending to normal life affairs and caused him to "lose the value of that time."

William accuses the Glen Carbon facility of negligence and wrongful death and asks to be awarded more than $100,000 for medical expenses, pain, emotional distress and mental anguish.

Attorney John J. Hopkins of Alton represents him.
