Woman accused of being intoxicated in Route 140 accident

An Edwardsville woman is accused of being under the influence of alcohol and causing a crash on Highway 140.
David B. Spiller and Tracy L. Cooper filed a complaint against Jayme Coleman on Feb. 22 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Spiller was driving a vehicle owned by passenger Tracy Cooper on Feb. 3, 2012, according to the lawsuit. The two were driving west on Highway 140 near the intersection of St. James Road. They say Coleman was driving east on Highway 40 and attempted to turn left onto St. James Road.

Spiller and Cooper say Coleman failed to yield to their vehicle and, therefore, caused the two to collide. They accuse her of negligence for allegedly failing to drive at the proper speed and failing to take the necessary steps to avoid hitting an oncoming vehicle. They also accuse Coleman of driving under the influence of alcohol and attempting to flee the scene of the crash.

Spiller and Cooper say they sustained "severe and permanent bodily injuries" as a result of the crash.

They are asking to be paid more than $100,000 in damages for medical expenses and lost wages. Attorney Brian M. Wendler of Edwardsville represents them.
