Failure to treat hematoma resulted in death, suit claims

A woman claims her sister died after doctors failed to treat a hematoma that she suffered in relation to a traumatic brain injury.

Judy Keeven filed a lawsuit Jan. 4 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against St. Elizabeth’s Hospital of the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis, Dr. Jacqueline Rickard, HSHS Medical Group, Dr. Barbara Sudholt, Southern Illinois Pulmonary Consultants and Dr. Panduranga Kini.

In her complaint, Judy Keeven alleges her sister, Linette Keeven, came under the care of doctors at St. Elizabeth’s on Jan. 5, 2011. However, doctors at the hospital failed to order appropriate tests, failed to respond to Linette Keeven’s subdural hematoma, failed to timely diagnose the hematoma, failed to obtain a consultation with an appropriate specialist and failed to advise Judy Keeven that her sister could receive an MRI using a ventilator.

Due to the doctors’ alleged negligence, Linette Keeven died on Nov. 13, according to the complaint.

Because of her sister’s death, Judy Keeven and her five siblings have been deprived of Linette Keeven’s society, companionship, love and affection, the suit states.

In her complaint, Judy Keeven is seeking a judgment of more than $700,000, plus costs and other relief the court deems just.

J. Michael Weilmuenster and J. Brian Manion of Weilmuenster Law Group in Belleville will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 13-L-9.
