An Edwardsville retirement home is accused of negligence after a resident allegedly fell and broke her hip.
Tom Bass, as executor of the estate of Gladys Bass, filed a lawsuit against Eden Retirement Center Inc. on Jan. 10 in Madison County Circuit Court.
Gladys Bass was living at Eden Village in Edwardsville in 2010 when she fell and seriously hurt herself, according to the complaint. Her son, Tom Bass, says his mother's injuries were caused by the nursing home's failure to ensure the resident's safety.
Bass says Eden Retirement Center staff failed to provide his mother with a working personal alarm, a low bed, a bed alarm or supervision while moving to and from her bed. He contends employees had a duty to protect Gladys by restricting her movement and ensuring she had assistance to safely move around the facility.
On May 10, 2011 Gladys Bass allegedly fell at the Eden Retirement Center, the petition reads, causing her to suffer a broken and dislocated hip, severe bruising, extreme pain and emotional suffering, anxiety and mental distress. Her son says she was forced to undergo surgeries and eventually "became lame from the injury to her hip." Gladys passed away on Jan. 17, 2012, according to the complaint.
Tom Bass contends Eden Retirement Center failed to recognize his mother as being at high risk for falling, failed to protect her from falls and failed to respond to help her after she fell. He accuses the Edwardsville nursing home of negligence and a violation of residents' rights. He asks for more than $50,000 in actual damages along with court costs and attorney fees.
Attorney Ronald A. Roth of Granite City is representing Bass.
