Appellate court candidate forum set May 4 in Belleville

Hardy

A candidate forum for Fifth District Appellate Court candidates Stephen McGlynn and Judy Cates is scheduled at noon on May 4 at Bellecourt Manor in Belleville.

Sponsored by the Appellate Lawyers Association (ALA), the forum will be moderated by ALA President William P. Hardy of Hinshaw & Culbertson in Springfield.

A luncheon coincides with the forum and costs $20 for ALA members and $30 for non-ALA members if registration is completed before April 27. The cost after that date is $30 for members after and $40 for non-members.

According to a release from the ALA, each candidate will be allotted time to discuss his or her qualifications, followed by a question and answer session where the moderator will pose submitted, written questions to the candidates.

McGlynn, a Republican, is a sitting circuit judge in St. Clair County. He was appointed to the seat following the July 2010 retirement of former Circuit Judge Michael O'Malley.

McGlynn also served on the appellate court, having filled a vacancy after Gordon Maag lost a retention race in 2004. In the general election race of 2006, McGlynn lost the seat to Bruce Stewart of Harrisburg.

Cates, a Democrat, is a Swansea personal injury attorney. She had previously sought a seat on the appellate court, but lost a primary race in 2008 to James Wexstten of Mount Vernon.

Registration can made online at http://www.applawyers.org/newevents.html.
