Suit against Virgil Calvert claims nursing home neglected resident

A lawsuit against a local nursing home has been moved from Cook County where it was filed in July 2010 to Madison County.

It accuses Virgil Calvert Nursing & Rehabilitation Center Inc. of abusing a resident and ultimately causing his death.

Judith Boyd, on behalf of her deceased husband, Larry Boyd, also names Virgil Calvert Property LLC, Cahokia Nursing & Rehabilitation Center Inc., SW Management Company and Cahokia Building LLC as defendants. Twenty-six other defendants are also listed.

According to the complaint, Larry Boyd was a resident at Virgil Calvert Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in August 2008. Boyd claims her husband, while in the care of the doctors and nurses at the Calvert facility, developed skin breakdown, which led to necrotic tissue, several ulcers, osteomyelitis and respiratory problems -- all of which she says led to the death of her husband.

Boyd accuses Calvert, Cahokia, SW Management and each of the defendants of violating Illinois' Nursing Home Care Act for their alleged abuse and neglect of her husband. She is also suing all of the defendants for wrongful death.

Boyd is asking for an unspecified amount of money in damages plus court costs.

She is represented by attorney Sonia Kapoor with Kralovec, Jambois & Schwartz in Chicago.
