Venice Social Club sued by woman who trips in parking lot

A Granite City couple is suing a local social club after the wife allegedly fell in the club's parking lot.

Tara and James Pope filed a lawsuit Feb. 10 in Madison County Circuit Court against the Venice Social Club.

According to the complaint, Tara Pope was at Venice Social Club to decorate for a wedding reception when she walked out the front door to the parking lot. Pope claims a truck was parked directly in front of the club's door so she had to choose to go to the left, over allegedly damaged and dangerous blacktop, or to the right, through gravel and over a curb.

Pope says she went to the right, caught her foot and fell. She claims she injured her knee in the fall.

Pope accuses the Venice Social Club of negligence for failing to maintain a safe parking lot and for not providing an acceptable walkway to the parking lot. Her husband is suing for loss of consortium.

They are asking for at least $100,000 in damages for medical costs and court fees.

Attorney William E. Miller III of Alton is representing the Popes.
