Mother sues Hwacheon Machinery over son's workplace death

Sansone

The mother of a Madison County boy is suing the makers of a lathe that allegedly killed her son.

Brenda Martin, on behalf of her son, filed a lawsuit Feb. 11 in Madison County against Hwacheon Machinery America Inc.

According to the complaint, Martin's son, who was a minor, was working for Global Brass and Copper in Madison County in July 2009. While the young man was attempting to polish a steel bar with a high speed lathe built by Hwacheon Machinery, the lathe allegedly malfunctioned, causing the steel bar to become stuck in the machine.

Martin says the steel bar then spun around and hit her son, causing his death.

Martin accuses Hwacheon Machinery of negligence for knowingly building an unsafe lathe and for failing to warn its users of the dangers.

She is asking for more than $50,000 in damages for the loss of her son. She is represented by attorneys Benjamin J. Sansone and Robert H. Pedroli Jr. of Clayton, Mo. They ask for a jury trial.
