Onion peel causes Shop 'n Save customer to slip and sue

A Cahokia Shop 'n Save is accused of negligence after a customer allegedly slipped on an onion peel.

Iola McDougler filed the complaint against Shop 'n Save Warehouse Foods Inc. and a store manager Sept. 10 in St. Clair Circuit Court.

McDougler says she was at the warehouse store on Camp Jackson Road in Cahokia on March 6 when she fell. The woman says she was walking between the cashier station and customer service desk when she slipped on an onion peel and fell. McDougler says she injured her neck, shoulder and lower back.

Also named in the suit is Pete Nissen, the Shop 'n Save manager who was working at the time of McDougler's alleged fall. McDougler accuses both defendants of negligence for failing to maintain a safe store, failing to remove the onion peel from the floor and failing to warn customers of potential hazards.

McDougler is asking for at least $50,000 from each defendant for medical expenses, pain and suffering and disability.

Attorney Thomas C. Rich of Fairview Heights is representing McDougler.
