14 new asbestos cases filed April 19-23 in Madison County

A total of 14 new asbestos lawsuits were filed in Madison County Circuit Court during the week of April 19 through April 23.

The following complaints were filed:

--Leona Burton of Illinois, an administrative assistant/clerical and accountant from 1957 until 1987, claims mesothelioma. Burton was also exposed to asbestos fibers through her husband, who worked as a laborer and manager at R.E. Common Equipment Company from 1960 until 1999, according to the complaint. Burton will be represented by Timothy F. Thompson Jr. of Simmons, Browder, Gianaris, Angelides and Barnerd in East Alton. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-455.

--Mary Cawvey of Florida claims her recently deceased husband, Charles Cawvey, developed lung cancer after his work as a boiler technician, powerhouse chief and maintenance supervisor from 1952 until 2000. Mary Cawvey will be represented by Brian J. Cooke of Simmons, Browder, Gianaris, Angelides and Barnerd in East Alton. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-452.

--Louis and Patricia Ezell claim Louis Ezell developed mesothelioma after his work as a member of the U.S. Navy from 1951 until 1955, as a farmer from 1955 until 1960 and as a worker at Olin from 1960 until 1995. The Ezells will be represented by Richard L. Saville Jr. of Saville and Flint in Alton. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-442.

--Louis J. Gualandi of Illinois, a laborer at Joliet Arsenal from 1943 until 1945, a farmer and laborer at Gualandi Farms from 1942 until 1987, a self-employed commercial and residential construction worker from 1965 until 1979 and a construction worker from 1987 until 1992, claims mesothelioma. Gualandi will be represented by Randy L. Gori of Gori, Julian and Associates in Edwardsville. W. Mark Lanier, Patrick N. Haines, W. Casey Harris and M. Clay Fostel of The Lanier Law Firm in Houston will serve of counsel. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-435.

--Charles Harvey of Iowa, a laborer, painter and contractor from 1943 until 1982, claims mesothelioma. Harvey will be represented by Brian J. Cooke of Simmons, Browder, Gianaris, Angelides and Barnerd in East Alton. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-453.

--R. Peter Iaukea of Florida, a laborer, drywaller, counselor, salesman, insurance agent and carpenter at various locations from 1955 until 2010, alleges mesothelioma. Iaukea will be represented by Christopher R. Guinn of Simmons, Browder, Gianaris, Angelides and Barnerd in East Alton. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-439.

--Thomas Kaisersatt of California, a laborer, pipefitter's helper, lab worker and software/computer programmer from 1959 until now, claims mesothelioma. Kaisersatt will be represented by Timothy F. Thompson Jr. of Simmons, Browder, Gianaris, Angelides and Barnerd in East Alton. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-437.

--Rudolph and Kathie M. Knowles of Florida claim Rudolph Knowles developed lung cancer after his work as a welder and boiler tube worker for Buckeye Cellulose Plant from 1967 until 1978, as a laborer for Occidental Mine in 1968 and as a construction worker from 1978 until 1979. The Knowles will be represented by Elizabeth V. Heller and Robert Rowland of Goldenberg, Heller, Antognoli and Rowland in Edwardsville. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-443.

--Howard L. Opperman of Missouri, a laborer, mechanic, welder, pipefitter, painter and minister at various locations from 1942 until 1986, claims an asbestos-related disease. Opperman will be represented by W. Brent Copple and Myles L. Epperson of Simmons, Browder, Gianaris, Angelides and Barnerd in East Alton. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-447.

--Antonios and Maria Pattas of Iowa claim Antonios Pattas developed mesothelioma after his work as a laborer, kiln burner, lancer, boiler tender and kiln operator at various locations from 1953 until 1991. The Pattas will be represented by Nicholas J. Angelides of Simmons, Browder, Gianaris, Angelides and Barnerd in East Alton. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-441.

--Laddie and Sandra Peterka of Arkansas allege Laddie Peterka developed mesothelioma after his work as an engineer, laborer and machinist at various locations from 1968 until 2010. The Peterkas will be represented by Shane F. Hampton and Paul M. Dix of Simmons, Browder, Gianaris, Angelides and Barnerd in East Alton. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-450.

--Dorothy Spencer of Texas claims her recently deceased husband, Tracy Clifford Spencer, developed mesothelioma after his work as a laborer and cementer at various locations from 1946 until 1979. Dorothy Spencer will be represented by Robert Phillips and Perry J. Browder of Simmons, Browder, Gianaris, Angelides and Barnerd in East Alton. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-446.

--Michael Theriault of New Hampshire claims his recently deceased father, Robert Theriault, developed mesothelioma after his work as a maintenance worker, laborer and millwright from 1951 until 1985. Michael Theriault will be represented by Nicholas J. Angelides of Simmons, Browder, Gianaris, Angelides and Barnerd in East Alton. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-436.

--Terry Ward claims his recently deceased wife, Laura A. Ward, developed mesothelioma after she was secondarily exposed to asbestos fibers through her father, who worked as an electrician and lineman from 1968 until 1990. Ward will be represented by Andrew O'Brien, Christopher Thoron, Christina J. Nielson, Bartholomew J. Baumstark and Gerald J. FitzGerald of O'Brien Law Firm in St. Louis. Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-454.
