Intoxication blamed in pool room attack

A man who says he was attacked at a bar has filed suit against his attacker and the bar who served alcohol to him.

Lawrence Booker III claims he was at the Spot Shot Pool Room located at 1516 State St. in East St. Louis on April 2 when the incident occurred.

Defendant Jay Ashford was also at the bar and became intoxicated after being served alcohol, according to the complaint filed Aug. 25 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

"As a result of said intoxication, Jay Ashford, intentionally caused bodily harm to plaintiff, Lawrence Booker III," the suit states.

Because of Ashford's attack, Booker sustained injuries to his face, experienced pain, suffering and disability and incurred medical costs, the complaint says.

Booker blames Spot Shot Pool Room for failing to supervise its patrons, for failing to provide adequate security and for failing to take adequate precautions to keep Booker from being assaulted.

In the three-count suit, Booker is seeking an unspecified judgment.

Lance R. Mallon and Dawna M. Hale of Mallon Law Firm in Wood River will be representing him.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-448.
