Woman slips on slippery substance at liquor store, sues

A woman is suing a liquor store after she says she was injured when she fell on a slippery substance.

Helen Brockman was shopping at Schmidt's of Alton on April 18, 2007, when she "did slip and fall with great force and violence," the suit filed March 11 in Madison County Circuit Court states.

Because of her fall, Brockman sustained injuries to her left knee, suffered great physical pain and mental anguish and incurred medical costs, the suit states.

She also sustained disability, disfigurement and loss of a normal life, she claims.

Schmidt's was negligent by failing to properly maintain walkways, by failing to routinely inspect walkways, by allowing a slippery substance to remain on its walkways and by failing to warn its customers of the slippery substance, according to the complaint.

Brockman is seeking a judgment in excess of $50,000, plus costs.

She is represented by Michael P. Glisson of Alton.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-0244.
