A St. Clair County woman claims she endures painful intercourse because of nerve damage a doctor caused during surgery.
Julie A. Schult was admitted to St. Elizabeth's Hospital on Feb. 5, 2007, for a hysterectomy and bilateral salpingooophorectomy that Dr. Steven Charles Mathus was to perform, according to the complaint filed Feb. 4 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.
However, during the surgery, Mathus failed to properly perform the procedure so as not to cause nerve damage, used instruments that caused Julie A. Schult's injuries and failed to use the necessary medical equipment to perform the procedure, the suit states.
Because of Mathus' negligence, Julie A. Schult suffered severe and continuing abdominal pain, pain with intercourse and bowel incontinency, she claims.
She has also suffered a loss of earnings, incurred medical expenses and suffered a loss of enjoyment of life, according to the suit.
Dennis Schult, Julie A. Schult's husband, claims he has suffered the loss of her society, companionship and sexual relationship.
In the two-count suit, the Schults are seeking a judgment in excess of $100,000, plus costs.
Terry N. Brown of Brown and Associates in Belleville will be representing them.
St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-0065.
