Kelly elected St. Clair County Circuit Clerk

Brendan Kelly, a Democrat, easily won election as St. Clair County Circuit Clerk over his Republican challenger, Terry Wright, with a margin of 64 percent to 36 percent.

Kelly received 60,033 votes to Wright's 40,638 votes in St. Clair County.

In East St. Louis, Kelly received 12,698 votes to Wright's 430 votes.

In total, Kelly received 73,770 votes to Wright's 41,760 votes.

Kelly, 32, is an assistant state's attorney from Swansea.

He will replace 28-year veteran Clerk Barney Metz who is retiring after a long career in public service.

Part of Kelly's job will include overseeing all court filings and receiving more than $4 million annually in court fees and fines.

He expressed "a big thank you" to voters in St. Clair County.

"I'm really shocked that as a first time candidate I was able to get 64 percent of the vote," he said. "I will try to do everything I can to deserve this support."
