Glen Carbon Development sued after customer trips at store

A Collinsville resident has filed suit against a Glen Carbon company, alleging she injured her hips and back after falling on steps on the company's property.

Barbara Wyatt was walking into the Burns Furniture Store, which is part of a shopping complex Glen Carbon Development owns, and tripped and fell on the stairs, according to the complaint filed Sept. 18.

In addition to back and hip injuries, Wyatt experienced pain and suffering, which will likely continue, and has become responsible for medical costs, the suit states.

Wyatt also claims her quality of life has been diminished.

Glen Carbon Development was negligent because it failed to furnish a handrail for the steps, failed to make them a uniform height, failed to designate a specific place to access the Burns Furniture Store from the parking lot and failed to make the steps safe, according to the complaint.

Wyatt is seeking a judgment in excess of $50,000, plus costs.

She is represented by John H. Leskera of Leskera Law Firm in Collinsville.
