Trial over hospital fall to begin

Alton Memorial

A personal injury trial against Alton Memorial Hospital is slated to begin Sept. 15 in Madison County Circuit Court.

David Haggett filed the suit against the hospital in July 2006, seeking damages in excess of $50,000 for injuries he allegedly received after falling on a slippery floor.

According to the suit, Haggett was assisting a friend into the emergency room on Aug. 25, 2004, when he fell on a slippery substance the janitorial staff allowed to remain on the floor.

Alton Memorial is expected to argue that Haggett's own contributory negligence was the cause for the fall and therefore any award, if any, should be reduced to reflect his own negligence.

Haggett claims the fall caused severe, permanent and progressive injuries to his lower back that caused a disability, loss of a normal life, pain and suffering, medical expenses and lost wages.

Haggett is represented by Aaron Lefton of St. Louis.

If the case does not settle or receive a continuance prior to trial, Circuit Judge Daniel Stack will preside over the trial.
