Granite City worker claims mesothelioma in Madison County suit

A former Granite City worker recently diagnosed with mesothelioma has filed an asbestos suit against 75 defendant corporations, claiming the disease was wrongfully caused.

Robert A. Carr claims he was diagnosed with the disease Aug. 15, according to a lawsuit filed Sept. 8 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Carr says he worked from 1948 until 1993 as an industrial maintenance and instrumentation worker at different facilities in Granite City, Niagra, Wis., and Escanaba, Mich., according to the lawsuit.

Carr states his exposure was foreseeable and should have been anticipated by the defendants, according to the lawsuit.

He claims his disease was caused after he was exposed to and inhaled, ingested or otherwise absorbed asbestos fibers.

Carr alleges the asbestos-related disease has disabled and disfigured him and has caused him substantial medical costs. Carr also has experienced great physical pain and mental anguish as a result of the disease, he claims in the lawsuit.

Mesothelioma hindered and prevented Carr from pursuing his normal course of employment, according to the suit.

As a result, he lost large sums of money, he claims.

In the four-count lawsuit, Carr seeks sums in excess of $300,000, plus costs of the suit and any other relief the court deems just.

He has demanded a jury trial.

He is represented by Andrew O'Brien, Christopher Thoron, Christina J. Nielsen, Bartholomew J. Baumstark, Gerald J. Fitzgerald of O'Brien Law Firm in St. Louis.
