St. Joseph's Hospital, doctors sued

St. Joseph's Hospital

Fred and Robeye Walker have filed a lawsuit against St. Joseph's Hospital and two doctors, alleging the doctors' incorrect diagnosis of Fred's left leg pain led to amputation.

According to the complaint filed Sept. 4 in Madison County Circuit Court, Dr. Anthony Sodd performed a left lower venous Doppler procedure on Fred's leg April 24.

Sodd reported Fred had a 3.3 centimeter popliteal cyst in his left leg, the Walkers claim.

Fred and Robeye state Fred returned to the hospital June 20 with severe leg pain and Dr. P. Shwan Shekar performed a left lower extremity arterial Doppler.

Shekar reported Fred had a left popliteal fossa cyst, according to the complaint.

Fred alleges Sodd and Shekar were negligent because they failed to properly interpret the tests they ran, failed to properly diagnose his condition as a left popliteal artery aneurysm and failed to treat him for the condition.

In addition, the couple alleges the doctors failed to supervise the technicians and other medical personnel performing the procedures.

The complaint says Sodd also failed to advise Fred's primary care physician of his left popliteal artery aneurysm and failed to refer him to a vascular surgeon.

The couple claims as a result of the negligence of Sodd and Shekar, Fred suffered serious and permanent injures, including the loss of his left leg in an above-the-knee amputation.

The Walkers claim St. Joseph's Hospital was negligent by providing servants and employees that committed negligent acts.

According to the Walkers, Robeye has and will continue to sustain a loss of support, guidance, service, consortium, and companionship of Fred.

In the six-count suit, the Walkers are seeking a judgment in excess of $300,000, plus costs and other relief the Court deems just.

Thomas Q. Keefe, Jr., of Belleville, and Kevin A. Sullivan, of St. Louis, will represent the Walkers.
