Wal-Mart sued by customer hit in head by falling tent

A customer at the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Belleville is suing for injuries she allegedly sustained last month when a tent pitched outside the entrance fell, striking her in the head.

Carolyn Williams claims Wal-Mart failed to provide a safe ingress and egress to the store, according to court papers filed July 16 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

The incident occurred June 27, the complaint says.

Williams claims she has suffered injuries to her head, and as a result suffers disability and pain. She also claims she has incurred medical expenses.

Williams is seeking in excess of $150,000 in damages. She is represented by Thomas C. Rich and Jennifer L. Barbieri of Fairview Heights.

She also is seeking additional discovery to determine if her injury was the result of an unknown third party who was allowed to set up the tent.
