Olin worker sues maker of conveyor for hand injury

An Olin employee who alleges he sustained serious and painful injuries to his right hand filed a strict liability and negligence suit against the manufacturer, distributor, designer and installer of a roller conveyor.

David Phillips is seeking at least $200,000 in damages from PKM Machine, GRP Mechanical, Cardinal Contracting, JF Electric and Integrated Industrial Systems, according to a suit filed in Madison County Circuit Court Sept. 13. Olin is not named in the suit.

Phillips alleges that on Sept. 16, 2005, his right hand became caught in the roller conveyor because it was unreasonably dangerous and defective. He claims the device lacked appropriate guards, warnings and instructions.

According to the suit, the machine was purchased and installed in Olin's East Alton facility in 2000.

Phillips claims he suffered permanent injuries to his right hand, wrist and arm which caused pain, suffering, medical expenses and economic losses which will reasonably last into the future.

He is represented by Roy Dripps of The Lakin Law Firm in Wood River.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Barbara Crowder.
