An elderly woman who allegedly fell while leaving the Food for Less store in Madison filed a personal injury suit against the grocer.

According to a suit filed July 13 in Madison County Circuit Court, Fern Campbell is seeking damages in excess of $50,000 for multiple hip fractures requiring the insertion of rods and pins, and a broken left arm.

The incident took place while Campbell was exiting the grocery store on Dec. 22, 2006.

She claims Food for Less negligently and carelessly caused and permitted the exit of their premises to become and remain in a dangerous condition because they maintained an exterior ramp which the standard drop of one inch per foot in violation of applicable standards and laws.

Campbell also claims Food for Less failed to warn her that it was not safe to take a shopping cart across the ramp and gave her a false sense of security by providing a receptacle for shopping carts in the parking lot to the west of the store.

According to the complaint, Campbell's injuries required hospitalization for five weeks and caused her to incur pain and suffering and the loss of enjoyment of life.
