Effingham hospital, doctors sued in federal court

Sandra Achor of Arizona filed a wrongful death suit against St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital of Effingham, Peter Bonutti, M.D., Eugene Dust, M.D. and Mid-Illinois Medical Care Associates in U.S. District Court Dec. 19.

Achor claims her husband, Roydee, went to St. Anthony's on Dec. 19, 2003, and came under the care of Bonutti and Dust along with the nursing staff of the hospital for a medical problem. The complaint does not describe the problem.

According to Achor, the defendants failed to exercise ordinary care, and failed to comply with the acceptable standard of care by failing to monitor her husband, inappropriately administering medication, and failing to provide prompt and appropriate resuscitative efforts to him.

Achor claims that as a result of the alleged deviations from the standard of care, her husband died on Dec. 20, 2003. His death has caused her to suffer a personal and pecuniary loss.

She claims she has lost his love, affection, society, and companionship that she enjoyed prior to his death. She also claims she has been forced to spend money for funeral and burial expenses.

Achor is seeking damages in excess of $450,000 which will fully and adequately compensate her for her loss.

She is represented by Peter Hoste of Leahy and Hoste in Chicago.

The case has been assigned to District Judge Phil Gilbert in Benton.
