Washington Park woman blames water company for her fall

Illinois American Water Headquarters in Belleville.

A Washington Park woman who fell into a hole while taking a stroll along the 1700 block of 61st Street in Washington Park filed suit against Illinois American Water Co.

Linda Johnson claims the hole she fell into was due to the water company's negligence. The water line either cracked, collapsed or caved-in, causing a hole or eroded area in the spot where she fell, the suit claims.

According to the complaint filed Dec. 14 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, Illinois American carelessly and negligently constructed and installed the water lines so they were susceptible to collapsing, breaking, cracking, or caving in and operated the lines in a manner that caused their demise.

Johnson also claims Illinois American failed to maintain and repair the water lines and around the area where she fell and failed to warn her and the public of the unreasonably dangerous condition that existed.

She claims she sustained serious personal injuries that have hindered and prevented her from attending to her usual and customary affairs, duties and occupation, has lost wages and profits and has suffered a great deal of pain and anguish, in both body and mind.

Represented by Columbia attorney Mark Scoggins, Johnson is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, costs of the suit and other relief the court finds proper under the circumstances.
