BJC named in St. Clair County med mal suit

A woman who alleges she became paralyzed after brain surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJC) in St. Louis filed a medical-malpractice suit in St. Clair County Circuit Court June 8 against the hospital and Washington University Medical Center.

Catherine Deist blames BJC for a post-procedure infection she developed after undergoing a blood patch on June 19, 2003.

According to the complaint, Deist became paralyzed, suffered permanent pain and mental anguish, disability, disfigurement, has been unable to attend to her normal affairs and has lost wages and income.

Richard Deist, Catherine’s husband, claims that he has been permanently deprived of the love, companionship, consortium, and support to which he was entitled and also claims he has became liable for large sums of money in medical expenses.

The Deists, represented by Thomas Keefe of Belleville, are seeking a judgment in excess of $300,000 plus all costs of the suit.
