Wal-Mart employee sues after firing

Glen Carbon Wal-Mart

A former Glen Carbon Wal-Mart employee filed suit in Madison County Circuit Court May 24 alleging he was fired after reporting safety problems.

Seeking in excess of $50,000, Michael Ahlvers claims that on Nov. 7, 2002, he reported unsafe working conditions, broken equipment and the fact that there were unclear safety rules for using safety glasses. He was fired the same day, according to the complaint, in spite of a satisfactory work record.

Ahlvers was a mechanic in the Tire Lube Express department and a member of his department's safety committee.

He claims his firing has caused him to lose income, benefits and he alleges emotional distress and damage to his reputation.

Ahlvers is represented by David Harris of Collinsville. The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Philip Kardis in Granite City.
