Law Day to be observed in Madison County

The Highland Optimist Club will be sponsoring mock trials for eighth-grade students Monday, May 2 at the Madison County Courthouse in observance of Law Day.

"The American Jury: We the People in Action" is the theme for this year's observation.

In Madison County a "Liberty Bell" award will be handed out to an individual who is not an attorney, according to Circuit Judge Daniel Stack.

“This award is traditionally given to someone who has done something good for society,” Stack told The Record. "And the kids always love the mock trials."

"There will also be an 'ask the lawyer' session in the courthouse where the general public can come in and ask lawyers of all kind questions they may have," Stack said.

U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower established Law Day by proclamation in 1958 after the American Bar Association instituted May 1 as Law Day to draw attention to both the principles and practice of law and justice.
