State Rep. Hoffman files personal injury suit for client

Jay Hoffman

Plaintiff's attorney and Illinois State Rep. Jay Hoffman (D-112) filed a personal injury lawsuit on behalf of his client Gurvir Grewal in St. Clair County Circuit Court April 6--a day in which the state legislature was in session.

Hoffman is an attorney for the Lakin Law Firm in Wood River.

State legislators returned to Springfield on April 5 after a long spring recess to resume--among other things--the contentious tort reform debate.

According to the suit filed by Hoffman, Grewal claims that Jimmy Hamilton carelessly crossed into his lane of traffic on Interstate 55/70 near the 10th mile marker in East St. Louis and caused a collision. Grewal was driving a 1998 Freightliner semi-truck and Hamilton, a 1993 Dodge Dakota.

At least $50,000 in damages plus all costs of the suit are being sought.

Grewal alleges that Hamilton failed to keep a proper lookout for other vehicles, failed to keep his vehicle under proper control, carelessly and negligently changed lanes, and drove his vehicle in a manner that violated the duty of care he owed to Grewal.

He also claims that after the collision Hamilton came into contact with him causing him to fall into oncoming traffic.

Grewal alleges he suffered injuries to his right leg, which included broken bones of the tibia and fibula and other portions of his body, medical expenses and lost wages.
